Start with problems, not pictures
Saved images are useful later. They are a poor starting point, because they describe a look rather than a problem. The better first exercise is to spend a week noticing what actually irritates you — the drawer you have to empty to find anything, the counter that is always covered, the corner nobody can reach.
A list of concrete problems produces a better kitchen than a mood board does, because it gives the design something specific to solve.
Questions worth answering honestly
- How many people cook here at the same time?
- Do you entertain, and where do guests end up standing?
- What appliances do you actually use weekly?
- Is the problem storage, workflow, or appearance?
- Do you need seating in the kitchen itself?
- How long do you plan to stay in the home?
- What would you regret not doing?
- What is genuinely fine as it is?
Matching ambition to budget
| If the goal is | The realistic scope is | Because |
|---|---|---|
| A fresher look | Refinishing, hardware, lighting, backsplash, paint | Nothing structural changes, so cost stays contained. |
| Better storage | New or reconfigured cabinetry with engineered interiors | Interiors, not appearance, are what solve storage. |
| A kitchen that works differently | Layout change, possibly moving plumbing or a wall | Workflow problems are layout problems. |
| A showpiece | Full remodel with premium cabinetry, stone and appliances | Finish level and detailing are where the money goes. |
Set the budget as a range with a reserve
A single number invites disappointment. A range gives the design somewhere to land, and it allows trade-offs to be made deliberately — deeper drawers instead of a fancier faucet, for instance.
Hold a contingency separately from the project budget. In an older Boca Raton home, the probability that demolition reveals something is high enough to plan for rather than hope against.
