Framed versus frameless
| Face-frame | Frameless | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | A frame across the front of the box | Box edges finished; no front frame |
| Access | Opening slightly reduced by the frame | Full width of the box |
| Capacity | Slightly less usable interior | Roughly ten percent more |
| Look | Traditional; supports inset doors | Clean, contemporary, tight reveals |
| Tolerance | More forgiving of out-of-square walls | Demands precise installation |
Door styles and what they signal
- Slab: flat, contemporary, shows the grain or the color
- Shaker: a recessed panel that suits almost any home
- Inset: doors set flush within the frame; the most exacting
- Beaded inset: traditional detailing with a bead around the opening
- Raised panel: classic and formal, currently less common
- Fluted or reeded: texture used selectively on islands and tall units
- Glass front: breaks up a heavy run and needs tidy interiors
- Mitered: a refined frame profile between Shaker and raised panel
What separates good cabinetry from cheap cabinetry
- Plywood boxes rather than particleboard
- Dovetailed or robust drawer box construction
- Full-extension soft-close slides
- Adjustable, concealed six-way hinges
- Finished interiors rather than raw panels
- Full-depth adjustable shelving, not half-depth
- Toe kicks and panels finished to match
- Consistent finish quality on the back edges of doors
Where to put the money
If the budget forces a choice, prioritize box construction and drawer hardware over door style. A simple Shaker door on excellent boxes with full-extension drawers will outperform an elaborate door on weak boxes every day for twenty years.
Interior fittings are the other place with real payback. Deep drawers instead of base shelves change how the kitchen functions more than any visible detail does.
