Homeowners reviewing stone samples and cabinet finishes with a kitchen designer

Before design begins

  • Write down what specifically does not work today
  • Note how many people cook at once
  • Inventory what you store and what has nowhere to go
  • Decide whether the layout must change
  • Set a budget range, not a single number
  • Identify a temporary kitchen location
  • Check association or condominium requirements
  • Note any planned appliance changes

During design

  • Confirm aisle clearances against the island size
  • Verify landing space either side of the range
  • Plan the waste pull-out beside the prep zone
  • Decide cabinet height and whether to remove soffits
  • Specify drawer storage in base cabinets
  • Resolve the pantry approach
  • Position the refrigerator so its door does not block traffic
  • Confirm window and door interactions with cabinet runs

Selections to finalize before ordering

  • Cabinet construction, door style, finish and hardware
  • Countertop material, edge profile and seam locations
  • Backsplash material, layout and grout color
  • Flooring material and transition details
  • Sink type, faucet and any pot filler
  • Exact appliance models and dimensions
  • Lighting plan with every layer and its switching
  • Paint colors for walls and ceiling

Before demolition

  • Permits issued where required
  • Association approvals in hand where applicable
  • Cabinetry ordered and delivery date confirmed
  • Appliances ordered or scheduled
  • Temporary kitchen set up and working
  • Kitchen fully emptied, including upper shelves
  • Protection planned for floors and adjacent rooms
  • Parking, access and debris removal arranged

Answers

Questions homeowners ask

What is most often forgotten?
Outlet placement, waste pull-out location and the lighting plan. All three are rough-in decisions that become expensive to change once walls close.
How early should appliances be chosen?
Before cabinetry is ordered. Openings are built to specific models, and a late substitution can mean modifying cabinetry on site.
Should I empty the whole kitchen?
Yes, including the cabinets above the refrigerator that nobody has opened in years. Anything left becomes dusty at best.
Do I need drawings before calling a remodeler?
No. A clear description of what is not working and a realistic budget range is more useful than a drawing.
