Pick the slab, not the sample
Natural stone varies from slab to slab, sometimes dramatically. A three-inch sample tells you the color family and nothing about how the veining will land across your island.
For any veined stone, seeing the actual slabs is the difference between a countertop you love and one that merely matches the sample.

What is the most durable countertop?
Porcelain slab and quartz are the most forgiving in daily use. Granite and quartzite are extremely hard but want periodic sealing.
Can marble work in a family kitchen?
It can, if you accept etching and patina as part of its character. If a perfect surface matters to you, a quartz or quartzite that mimics marble is the better fit.
How thick should the countertop be?
Three centimeters is the common standard. A mitered build-up creates an apparent two- or three-inch edge for a more substantial look without the weight of solid stone.
Can seams be hidden entirely?
Not entirely, but placement and careful vein matching make them far less noticeable. Where a seam lands is a decision, and it should be discussed before fabrication.
