Three layers, three jobs

A well-lit kitchen uses separate layers on separate switching so the room can be bright for cooking and calm in the evening.

Ambient

General illumination, usually recessed downlights on a grid that accounts for cabinet positions rather than ceiling symmetry.

Task

Under-cabinet lighting on the counter, plus pendants or dedicated downlights over the island and sink.

Accent

In-cabinet glass lighting, toe-kick washes and shelf lighting that give the room depth after dark.

  • A consistent temperature across every fixture in the room

Lighting is a rough-in decision

Almost every lighting choice has to be made before drywall closes. Fixture positions, switch locations, dimmer types and the circuits feeding each layer are electrical rough-in work. Adding a layer afterwards means opening ceilings.

This is why the lighting plan is drawn alongside the cabinet plan rather than treated as a finish selection. Pendant positions depend on final island length; under-cabinet wiring depends on where the uppers actually land.

How many recessed lights does a kitchen need?
It depends on ceiling height, room size and how reflective the finishes are. Placement matters more than count — lights positioned over the front edge of the counter light the work surface, while lights centered in the room light the tops of your cabinets.
Are pendants over an island necessary?
Not functionally if there are downlights, but they define the island visually and give the room scale. Two larger pendants usually read better than three small ones on a typical island.
Is under-cabinet lighting worth the cost?
It is consistently the upgrade people say they would repeat. Without it, your body shadows the counter whenever you work at it, which no amount of ceiling lighting fixes.
Can lighting be improved without a full remodel?
